It was jubilation galore at Salvation Chamber, Offa Road, Ilorin, as twenty indigent students from various federal universities across Nigeria received the 2026 Mojirola Educational Foundation Scholarship, with twelve of the winners coming from the University of Ilorin. The ceremony was filled with joy and gratitude as the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the sponsor, organizers, and the University of Ilorin for the opportunity.
Each beneficiary received two hundred thousand naira in cash support. The scholarship, now in its fourth edition, has been running consistently for several years and targets brilliant but indigent students in federal universities, with special preference for those of Kwara origin and particularly from Oro. This year, over three hundred applications were received, but only twenty students were selected after a rigorous process involving registration, screening, shortlisting, and physical interviews to ensure transparency and merit.
Speaking at the event, the Programme Coordinator, Associate Professor Dr. Ruth Abiola Adimula of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, said the scholarship was established a few years ago by Engineer Leye Joseph Duntoye, an alumnus of the University of Ilorin and an indigene of Oro town. She explained that advertisements for the scholarship are usually published in January on the Mojirola Foundation website, while awards are presented between April and early May. She noted that the strong showing of Unilorin students this year reflects both the quality of education at the university and the sponsor’s commitment to giving back to his alma mater. She also shared an inspiring story of a past beneficiary who, after graduating from UNILORIN, won a scholarship to study in the United States and has become a pride to the foundation. The foundation, she added, even provided a recommendation letter for him.
The Desk Officer of the Mojirola Educational Foundation, Mr. Ayobami Olatunde Michael, stated that the program began in the 2021/2022 academic session and now awards scholarships to twenty beneficiaries annually across federal universities in Nigeria. He emphasized that there is no room for favoritism in the selection process and urged other students to apply in subsequent editions while praying for more blessings for the sponsor.
Among elated winners was Adebayo Samuel Adesire, a 500-level Chemical Engineering student at the University of Ilorin, who is receiving the scholarship for the third consecutive time since 2022. He thanked the sponsor and the university management for the quality education that has boosted his confidence and improved his CGPA from 4.2 to 4.4. He also pledged to give back to the Mojirola Educational Foundation and to indigent citizens when he is financially stable in the future.
Also expressing their gratitude were Oladipo Adebukola Praise, a 200-level Surveying and Geoinformatics student from Ijomu Oro, Kwara State, and Opadiji Rinsola Michelle, a 100-level History and International Studies student. Both thanked Almighty God for the privilege of winning the scholarship and appreciated the sponsor, Engineer Leye Joseph Duntoye, as well as the university for providing them the platform to succeed. They said the award would motivate them to read harder and perform better in their studies.
The sponsor, Engineer Leye Joseph Duntoye, was described as a philanthropist deeply committed to the wellbeing of indigent but brilliant students. The coordinator prayed for him to continue rising higher and called on other well-meaning Nigerians to support the education of less privileged students in the society.
