Imam Aliy Kamal Explains Financial Obligations in Islam

  By Idris Alooma

The Chief Imam of Isa Elelu Central mosque, Muritala Mohammed Way, Ilorin, Imam Aliy Kamal, has explained financial obligations in Islam, shedding light on the often-misunderstood topic.

He explained this during a Ramadan special Lecture, emphasizing that in Islam, the husband is financially responsible (nafaqah) for his wife's food, clothing, housing, and basic needs. This is based on the Qur'an (4:34), which states, "Men are maintainers and protectors of women... because Allah has given one more (strength) than the other, and because they spend from their wealth."

He said the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also emphasized the husband's financial responsibility in several Hadiths. For instance, he said, "Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock... A man is a shepherd over his family and is responsible for them" (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This clearly shows that the husband carries financial and leadership responsibility, and he will be questioned about how he fulfilled it.

Imam Aliy Kamal further highlighted that a woman has full financial independence in Islam. Her salary and wealth are her own property, and she's not obligated to spend on household expenses. This is based on Qur'an 4:32, which states, "For men is what they earn, and for women is what they earn." Islamic scholars agree that the husband must financially maintain the wife, and the wife is not obligated to spend from her wealth.

In conclusion, Imam Aliy Kamal emphasized that Islam emphasizes the husband's financial responsibility and the wife's financial independence. By understanding and respecting these principles, couples can build a harmonious and blessed marriage. As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "It is sufficient sin for a man that he neglects those whom he is responsible to provide for" (Sunan Abu Dawud).
