KWASU Professor's Valedictory Lecture Sparks Hope for Polygyny Reform
In an epoch making valedictory lecture Prof Najeem Adeyemi Ijaiya, a renowned law professor at Kwara State University, Malete, has sparked hope for polygyny reform in Nigeria with his valedictory lecture. Titled "Law as an Instrument of Social Change: Any Hope for Polygyny?", the lecture challenges the legal system's treatment of polygyny, advocating for recognition and protection of polygynous marriages under Nigerian law.
Prof. Ijaiya argues that polygyny can be empowering for women, allowing economic collaboration and shared parenting. He emphasizes that the current legal framework creates uncertainty and vulnerability for women and children, highlighting the need for reform.

Prof Ijaiya proposes key reforms, including codifying spousal rights, allowing optional civil registration, and promoting public education on polygyny. This aligns with calls for mandatory registration of all marriages and consent requirements for additional marriages, aiming to balance cultural diversity with gender equality and human rights.
He noted that Nigeria's dualist approach to marriage law creates legal ambiguity, disproportionately affecting women and children in polygynous unions. Experts argue that harmonizing customary practices with constitutional rights is achievable through comprehensive legislation and public education campaigns.
The conversation on polygyny in Nigeria reflects broader tensions between cultural autonomy, religious freedom, and international human rights obligations. Prioritizing dialogue, education, and inclusive policymaking is crucial for a more inclusive future for polygyny in Nigeria.
