AATU's Ascent: Pioneering Tech-Driven Excellence and Self-Reliant Graduates in Nigeria's Heartland - VC

    By Idris Alooma

In a groundbreaking interview with UNILORIN FM radio station,  Professor Abdulrauf Ambali, Vice Chancellor of Abdulrasaq Abubakar Toyin University (AATU), unveiled the institution's ambitious vision to revolutionize higher education in Nigeria. With a mantra of "technology-driven excellence," AATU is poised to redefine the academic landscape in Kwara State and beyond.

Located in Ganmo, Kwara State, AATU is a member of the KU8+ consortium, under the mentorship of the University of Ilorin. This affiliation underscores AATU's commitment to academic excellence and innovation, leveraging the expertise of seasoned institutions to forge its path.

Prof. Ambali, a seasoned political scientist and former Dean of Student Affairs at Kwara State University, Malete, brings a wealth of experience to his role. His vision for AATU is two-fold: to become a technology-driven university and a first-class institution with state-of-the-art equipment, rivalling global benchmarks.

The Vice Chancellor's international exposure has shaped AATU's unique approach, drawing inspiration from Asian countries like China, where professionalism and vocational training are paramount. "Nigeria got it right with the 6-3-3-4 educational system," Prof. Ambali notes, "but it wasn't sustained. We aim to revive that focus on practical skills."

At AATU, students will acquire skills before graduation, with entrepreneurship a key priority. This approach, Prof. Ambali believes, will produce job creators, not job seekers. His collaboration with Prof. Abdulrasheed NaAllah, Chairman of the Governing Council, will drive this vision forward.

Research is a cornerstone of AATU's mission, with priorities aligned with global trends. Prof. Ambali has supervised over 38 PhD students, emphasizing that "discovery can never stop." Innovations like the Kwara  State Internal Revenue Service  (KWIRS) showcase the power of research in driving development, which was a  byproduct of KWASU.

Campus life at AATU is designed to be modern and secure, with conventional and locally sourced security personnel, CCTV cameras, and upcoming specialized units like an intelligence unit and rapid response team. The serene environment is complemented by excellent facilities, including solar-powered hostels and classrooms.

The university's commitment to affordability is evident in its moderate tuition fees. Prof. Ambali attributes this to the institution's focus on sustainability and the proprietor's support. "Our IGR is fantastic," he says, "and will support the proprietor's vision."

AATU currently offers 14 NUC-approved programs, with 19 more in the pipeline for the 2026/2027 academic session. The IJMB programme has commenced, and the university is poised to make a significant impact. Prof. Ambali commends Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, Vice Chancellor of UNILORIN, for his leadership and support.

As AATU welcomes its inaugural class of 700 students from 27 states, the journey has begun. With its innovative approach, AATU is set to become a game-changer in Nigeria's higher education sector, embodying the spirit of excellence and progress.
